Shareware Review

I am still looking at other screen capture programs (see the Shareware page), but I decided to go ahead and say a few words about my initial impressions of this one, which are positive.

I tried TNT first because it integrates with a documentation product which I am considering, called Help & Manual. If you write help files in various formats, I encourage you to see the manufacturer's website (ec-software.com).

You choose settings before you capture the image. The settings remain for all subsequent snapshots until you change them again. Although this software does not have fancy features for editing the screen image afterwards, it creates a bitmap image and can convert it to GIF, JPEG, TIFF and other formats, so you can then edit the image easily with other programs.

Nice features:

  1. A helpful wizard to teach you how to get started.
  2. Settings to capture just a single window or menu, an area of your choosing (you define a rectangle's opposite corners to capture everything within), or a fixed size region which you position wherever you want. The fixed size region is useful when you are adding screen images of a predetermined size to documentation.
  3. Snapshots that are quite clear if the zoom is set at 100 percent and reasonable at other factors - 33, 50, 75, or 200 percent.
  4. Easy to choose between the default colors of different versions of MS Windows or the colors you have configured on your system. This is particularly useful for instructing others, who may be confused by seeing your personal customized color scheme.
  5. Choices for background color and shading to make your screen image stand out from the rest of the page.
