Shareware Review

I have been using GetRight the longest of the shareware listed here, but I do not use it as often. However, when I do, I often want to copy or install quite a few things from the Internet at once. GetRight is wonderful at this, as it allows you to queue up a multitude of files to download one or two at a time - or even more at once, but I would not recommend that unless you have a fast Internet connection. You can pause a download at any time simply by clicking the "pause" button, then resume where it left off just as easily.

This program suits the way I work. I'll be searching for things, find something I want, start GetRight on its task, go get a snack, come back and pause the file transfer to search for something else, add that to the queue, etc. You can also schedule downloads for times when your other work won't compete with them, like in the middle of the night. This software can even initiate the Internet connection on its own and then hang up the phone when it has finished.

The only trouble I have had with GetRight is that some sites seem to be geared for only one download method. I have not been able to use it to download Microsoft software updates, for example, but that does not surprise me. Usually it works fine, but sometimes it takes a little special effort to get it started.

A note of caution for the inexperienced: this software is basically easy to use, but some things may be a little confusing to people who do not quite grasp what happens during a download or how web file names relate to web page names. Also, when you click on a download link, GetRight may or may not automatically take control. It depends on the site and the name they have given the file. Sometimes you have to right-click the link and choose "download with GetRight." Sometimes even that does not work. In that case, I have managed to use it by right-clicking the link, choosing "properties," highlighting the file name and copying that to the clipboard, and then going into the GetRight program and choosing the "file" menu, then "enter new URL," whereupon I paste in the file name and everything is fine from there. If I have lost you, you might not want to bother using it except where this program takes over automatically.

If you download more than once a month, GetRight is definitely worth trying. With all the things on the Internet worth downloading these days, I suspect more and more people will come to appreciate this product.
